Summary
The chapter opens with Gandalf and Pippin heading east toward Minas Tirith. The city amazes Pippin, but he notices that it is becoming decayed. As they approach the court, Gandalf warns Pippin to be careful of what he says.
Denethor is in the Hall of Kings. There is tension between Denethor and Gandalf, but Denethor is interested in Pippin. Pippin offers his sword in service of Gondor, and in response Denethor accepts Pippin into his Guard. Denethor talks to Pippin, deliberately ignoring Gandalf. Finally, the two men speak. Gandalf says his only concern is preserving the good in Middle-earth during the current period of evil. Afterward, Gandalf tells Pippin to be wary about Denethor.
Pippin looks over the city walls and sees a deep shadow in the east. The captains of the Outlands arrive with reinforcements, but they are smaller than expected. That night...
