Chapter 9, the Return of Martin Guerre Summary and Analysis
Martin Guerre has been fighting in Flanders for King Phillip II of Spain, and has his leg shot off at the battle of St. Quentin. He survives the operation to amputate it and is taken care of by his Spanish army comrades. As a reward for his good service to the King of Spain, he is made a member of, and supported by the military order, the Knights of St. John, for a long time. Then, for unknown reasons, Martin Guerre abandons his supported life at the Spanish kingdom's expense and returns to his home.
