Chapter 5, the Invented Marriage Summary and Analysis
Arnaud goes to a hostel in perhaps, Pailhes or Mane, villages near Artigat. He may not have been in a rush to go home and is looking for a new chance to do something fun or profitable, and hears the story of the missing Martin Guerre. He waits there, actually, or pretending to be sick, while word first spreads to Martin's four sisters, who happily meet Arnaud/Martin. Martin's wife Bertrande, his uncle Pierre and others come to meet him. By carefully preparing announcements of the return of Martin Guerre, Arnaud has his family and friends expecting to find "Martin" there.
