Point of View
The narrative in The Rest of Us Just Live Here is related in both the third-person omniscient and first-person limited points of view. Each narrative mode is given specific purpose in the novel. A preface section to each chapter is told in the third-person omniscient perspective from the point of view of an unknown narrator, who reveals to the reader the unfolding battle between the indie kids and the Immortals. The reader is given a broad overview of these events, while in the bulk of the chapters, narrated in the first-person by Mikey, Mikey and the other characters do not have the same knowledge. Essentially, the third-person contextualizes for the reader the bits and pieces of information cobbled together by Mikey through his own personal experiences with the Immortal war as a backdrop to his own life.
