Summary

In Chapter 9, Emma tells readers about the boat accident that caused Chris’ death. It happened on Waverly’s birthday. She was dating Emma’s father who was in dental school. When Waverley found out that he could not celebrate her birthday with her because he had to attend a mandatory study group session, she got so mad that she went out the night before her birthday and got drunk. Celeste held a party for her on her birthday, but Waverly’s treatment of Celeste caused her to be kicked out. Waverley and Chris left the party together and got intoxicated. Afterwards, they talked on the raft, and Waverly suddenly disappeared, which was something she did often. Chris got into the motor boat to find her, had an accident and died.
