Summary
Scene eight is one of the shortest, and in many ways, the most extra-diegetic scene in the entire play. Depicting the terrorism which Ui’s gangsters have unleashed upon the workers, it has only one character, the unnamed Wounded Woman, who essentially addresses the audience with her pleas. She climbs out of a truck riddled with bullet holes, screaming for help, saying that they (the truck drivers and factory workers) are being killed by Ui’s men. The Wounded Woman curses Ui, calling him “scum” and a “crock of shit”, and claiming that everyone turns their heads and lets him get away with murder (59). Her final pleas are directed at the audience, telling them to “Stand up! Fight Back! Protest!” before she is gunned down by a machine gun offstage (59).
Scene nine depicts the warehouse fire trial, and occurs in a segmented fashion...
