Grant Cannon-Chastanet
The narrator of the novel, Gwen’s father, and Eleanor’s husband. Grant is a former educator and avid reader who exposes Gwen to literary texts and traditions. He also teaches Gwen how to pitch and along with Eleanor, is the person most responsible for helping her develop her talent. He has an aptitude for engineering new devices out of existing or old technologies and creates several tools that allow the family to bypass Aunt Nettie’s surveillance. Loyal to his family, Grant’s love and admiration for Eleanor and Gwen motivates each action he takes, even when his actions seem misguided.
Grant is critical of the controlling government that has taken over AutoAmerica and occasionally expresses anger about the segregation, injustice, and discrimination that took over.
