Summary
Chapter 14 takes place on September 4 and is narrated by Maria. Maria talks to Ernest, who is in a good mood. Ernest feels confident that Edgar will arrive in time for the bonfire later that week. Ernest also continues to feel some type of spiritual attachment between Wyatt and Ray-Ray. Maria is somewhat concerned about Ernest’s mental state, but she hopes that Ernest is right about Ray-Ray’s spirit. Wyatt goes with Maria to the children’s shelter. Wyatt entertains the children by telling a story about a boy from Quah, Oklahoma who goes to a place called the Darkening Land. Wyatt also knows Cherokee stories and legends. He speaks of Tsala and the Yunwi Tsunsdi. On the drive home, Wyatt says to Maria that he thinks she is a good mother. At home, Ernest amazedly says that he feels better than ever, and...
