In chapter thirty-three, the museum closing finds George alone in his office, attempting to get up the courage to ask Margo out. George decides against it and leaves for the night.
In chapter thirty-four, D'Agosta meets Special Agent Coffey, the man assigned to take Pendergast's place on the investigation. Pendergast takes the news well, telling D'Agosta that it will just give him more time to investigate on his own.
In chapter thirty-five, Smithback meets with Rickman, where he is forced to sign a memo restricting his access to the museum and what he can write about regarding the museum. Smithback agrees only because he catches sight of Whittlesey's journal in her desk drawer. Smithback hangs back after Rickman leaves and steals the journal.
