Summary
Chapter 23: Rudolph II Hospital, Vienna. 7 June 1944.
Helena Lang walked quickly through Ward 4. In recent weeks, with the good weather, Vienna had been bombed every single day. Her mother would be upset with her if she knew how she avoided the eligible Dr. Brockhard who was obviously interested in her. He came from an upper-crust family but she neither liked him nor his family and she wasn’t going to be her mother’s ticket back into high society. Her mother blamed the war for the demise of her father’s business. He had lost Jewish lenders and wasn’t able to pay his creditors. Her father was in prison for conspiring with the Jews. Helena didn’t miss the high life; she missed her father.
