Summary
Chapter 9: 1942.
Gudbrand was crouching in a trench holding his gun with both hands and watching the flares light up the dark Russian sky. Gudbrand was shooting where Daniel Gudeson was directing him to shoot. Another soldier, Sindre Fauke, yelled bitterly that the enemy soldier was getting away. Daniel vowed that the soldier would not get away and fired at him. Gudbrand threw himself on the bottom of the trench when a return mortar was fired at them. Daniel had stayed on the perimeter of the trench and had continued to fire on the enemy soldier.
Daniel borrowed Gudbrand’s spade and took off into the dark night. The other soldiers didn’t know what he was planning to do, but he was taking quite a risk by walking out into the open field. The enemy was all about. Only Gudbrand was sure...
