Clanton is the small town where a good deal of the action in the novel takes place. Clanton is the town where generations of the Banning family have lived and raised cotton. It is where Pete kills Dexter, where his trial takes place, and where he is electrocuted.

Clanton Methodist Church

It is in the reverend’s office in the Clanton Methodist Church that Pete shoots Dexter twice in the chest and once in the face. Pete confronts Hop in the hallway after the shooting and orders Hop to get the sheriff.

Rome, Georgia

Rome, Georgia is the town to which Jackie and her children move after Dexter is killed. Errol, an acquaintance from high school, latched onto Jackie once she returned to town with the intention of benefiting from Dexter’s death.
