Summary

In Chapter 26, on the fourth day, the prisoners were marched through the city of Lubao. Residents threw food from the upstairs windows of their home but the Japanese ordered the prisoners to ignore it. Those who tried to eat were beaten or killed.

While walking one day, Pete was hit in the back of the head by a Japanese soldier’s rifle. He was knocked unconscious and fell into a ditch. Because Pete’s friends, Sal and Ewing, were marching ahead of Pete they did not see what happened. When Sal and Ewing realized that Pete was not with them, they asked around until they found out what happened. They heard the sounds of shooting, the Japanese killing the soldiers who had fallen by the roadside and were not able to continue, and assumed Pete was among those killed.
