The Relationship between Zee and Gentry
While the relationship between Gentry and Zee is atypical in many ways, it plays a vital role in this novel's main story line by demonstrating that two people who seem very different can actually show the highest levels of acceptance and loyalty.
Gentry and Zee have backstories, but during this novel their relationship is a defining factor in each character. Gentry Frank is a high-functioning autistic man who has made an oath to protect Zee.
