Importance: This is the first time the reader sees the situation from Gentry's perspective, and the change in language from Zee's casual tone to this is a shock. This is how Gentry always speaks and some readers may be put off by the language, at least at first. The reader who can get past the formal language will likely see the humor from the beginning. Gentry says that he would have been happy to guard Zee's door “like a dog.” At this moment, however, she does not need a guard – she needs someone to carry Marcus.
