Summary

Chapter 32 is titled “Zee.” She thinks about the argument with Charlene as she drives and Gentry sleeps. She is not proud of some of her words. She had accused Charlene of treating Gentry like a child. After lunch, Gentry drives on to Southern Missouri. Zee realizes she is now comfortable riding without the sound of talking or the radio. Alva's house is dilapidated, but he rushes out to welcome her when she arrives. He says he cannot be sure who was listening on the phone as a means of explaining that abrupt conversation. Alva's son Dirk arrives, then his son Dane. Alva puts off any serious conversation, saying only that it is right that Zee turn to family considering the situation.
