Summary

Chapter 7 is titled “Zee.” Zee suggests a motel but Gentry says he wants her near so he can protect her. She is surprised when they do not go toward Miranda's house and more so when he arrives at a nice home and introduces Charlene Frank, his mother. Charlene notes the confusion and explains that she and her husband Bill adopted Gentry, and Miranda is his biological mother. Charlene makes them feel at home and dismisses the possibility of her going somewhere else. Gentry sharpens knives until Charlene makes him stop, then he begins to scratch the back of his neck. He chops vegetables and a chicken. Charlene sends Gentry to help Zee make up the guest beds, then the three take naps.

Zee wakes to the sounds of Gentry and his adopted brother Trang jousting in the yard. Bill arrives and Zee discovers...
