Summary
Chapters 32 - 41 include the second half of Part 5 and the last chapters of the novel. Chapter 32 opens while Anton directs the children as they practice in front of St. Kolumban. They start marching, playing an easy German traditional favorite. People in the town cheer, except for Herr Franke who tells Anton to play a more traditional German song. Anton has the children play a challenging traditional German song and they sound terrible. The chapter ends as Mobelbauer threatens Anton telling him to make the children better, otherwise he will think Anton was lying to him about honoring the Fuhrer.
Chapter 33 begins a week later as the band assembles again outside St. Kolumban to practice. Suddenly they see the door next to the church open, and a soldier stagger out of the tunnel into the sunlight and into the graveyard, “A soldier, come up...
