Summary

Chapters 24 - 28 include the second half of Part 4. Chapter 24 begins as Anton makes his way to the first band rehearsal. He is nervous as he walks on the cold January day, eating Elisabeth’s liver and onion sandwich. The teacher greets him outside the school and brings him inside to a classroom of boys, including his own two sons. The children are excited, and Anton thinks of how music might “keep them anchored to love and righteousness” (220). He passes around the instruments and explains them. After the children experiment and pick their instruments, he heads home with Al and Paul. When they arrive home, Elisabeth tells him about two students who are about to be executed who are thought to be members of the White Rose.
