Summary

Chapters 15 - 18 are the entirety of Part 3, “The Ways a Man Might Earn His Pay; February - May 1943” (131). Chapter 15 opens with Anton walking to the church to meet Father Emil. It is a Tuesday and Father Emil has called for Anton because something is wrong with the church organ. Anton tries the organ but it is fine, and Father Emil mentions if something had been wrong he would have had to send Anton to another town with a message. They make awkward small talk, and Father Emil asks about how Anton is doing with money and music lessons. Father Emil mentions there are other ways he could make money, with the caveat that he considers Anton a friend. He tells Anton he can be paid to carry messages to the next town.
