Chapters 37, 38, 39, 40 Summary
In chapter thirty-seven, Vanessa buys ten kids' backpacks to store the gold in. She drives around for hours up and down Interstate 81 waiting for darkness. Max makes his way back to the United States under the name of Malcolm Bannister. He arrives in Atlanta where he rents a car.
Vanessa leaves Nathan's car in the Roanoke airport parking lot. She transfers the gold to her own car. She meets up with Max at a motel in Asheville, North Carolina. They carefully count the gold bars in each cigar box. There are 579 bars, which is worth around $8.5 million.
In chapter thirty-eight, the FBI have lost track of Max Baldwin in Jamaica. They do not know who Nathaniel Coley is and why Max was with him. They want to find out what he is up to.
