Penn Cage
Penn Cage is a thirty-eight-year-old author and former prosecutor. After the death of his wife Sarah from cancer, Penn returns to his hometown Natchez, Mississippi with his daughter Annie to try and rebuild their lives. Arriving for what he hopes will be a soothing recover period, Penn is stunned to discover that his father is being blackmailed for a crime committed long ago. Penn has spent his life trying to be sure that the law is followed but needs to break the law in order to save his father.
While trying to remove his father from harm, Penn becomes embroiled in the history of the town when a race murder thirty years past is resurrected in the town's memory. Penn becomes the center of the storm as racism that has simmered below the surface in Natchez for so long rises again and people choose sides.
