Chapters 26-30 Summary

Penn arrives in front of his burning family home and his mother tells him that Ruby is still inside. Breaking a window and entering from the rear, Penn struggles, but finds Ruby, flesh burning, on the floor with a broken hip. As he feels himself passing out, Penn is able to push Ruby to a window and is pulled to safety. Coming to outside, Penn's mother tells him that Annie is missing. Galvanized, Penn searches the crowd and is preparing to call the police when a neighbor arrives with Annie. The girl had been dropped off with a note, warning Penn how easy it would be for his daughter to disappear.

At the hospital, Penn and his father pray over Ruby, who dies waiting for a helicopter to transport her to an area burn unit. Caitlin arrives and tells Penn that...
