Chapters 11-15 Summary

In chapter 11, Penn rides home with Sam and the two discuss the situation in Natchez. Sam also warns Penn off the Payton murder, suggesting that nothing good can come of it. In regards to the comments that Maude had made, Penn is truly confused. The last he had heard Olivia was living in Atlanta married to an attorney. Sam has heard rumors that the marriage may be ending.

A sheriff's car follows the men and stops outside Penn's house. Penn approaches and finds a large, black deputy who tells Penn that the deputy is there with unfinished business. Returning to Sam, Penn is informed that the deputy is likely Ike "The Spike" Ransom, a former high school football star. Penn tells Sam goodnight and waits for Ransom to return.
