Summary
In Chapter 31, “The Assizes,” Owen is torn about the fact that he would be returning to Tatton Hall. The Assizes are an annual court, overseen by the king and held in various parts of the kingdom. Mancini is angry that he is going to have to ride a horse. He tries to convince Berwick to arrange for a wagon, but Berwick refuses. Evie rushes into the room, crying, and announces that she will not be going with them. Owen had not considered she might not be with him. Evie says her grandfather, Horwath, does not want her along and she fears for Owen's safety.
Owen suddenly realizes that he has spent little time thinking about Evie because he has spent so much time dealing with his grief over being separated from his parents. Horwath tries to get Evie to leave the room. She...
