Summary
In Chapter 8, “Her Majesty,” Owen runs directly down the path as Liona instructed, planning to ask the queen for help reaching Tatton Hall where he believes he can live in hiding on the estate. Owen struggles with fear as he passes the men who hide out at Our Lady. He sees a fat man sitting at the edge of a reflecting pool. The man throws crumbs on the ground for the pigeons. While they are eating, he stomps his feet and the pigeons scatter in fear. He begins dropping more crumbs and the pigeons return. The man, later identified as Mancini, tells Owen the birds “cannot resist their need to eat” (65). Mancini asks if Owen is going to make a wish, and gives Owen a coin to throw in The Fountain. Mancini says both he and the coin are from Genevese. Mancini leaves...
