Summary
In “Chapter 2,” Mr. Ganz talked to the superintendent, Helen Deardorff, and told her that Beth was a prodigy. He asked if he could take Beth to the high school so she could play against 12 players at once. Mrs. Deardorff agreed. The state came down against the house for giving sedatives to the orphans so the pills were banned. Beth panicked and quickly ran out of her stash. Jolene said she was having an affair with Mr. Fergusson, a college student who worked at the house. He had given her a few extra pills, and she gave some to Beth before her chess match. Beth won all 12 games in less than two hours. Back at the house, she was desperate for pills. She broke into the medical wing and took a handful, then attempted to escape with the whole jar.
