Fate: Controlling or Controllable?
The author's use of fate forces the reader to realize that it is a real entity for everyone, and choosing one's own fate is a much more difficult task than accepting its' influence. Many of the the characters attempt to fight against it. However, almost all of them succumb to it, believing that they have no other options. The author wants the reader to understand that this easy route is not always the best one. It takes a strong will and willingness to lose it all in order to create one's own path and defy fate. Three characters represent the different approaches to this concept; The Empress, Euphrosyne, and Lilliet herself.
The Empress is an example of someone who decided to be submissive to fate after a long battle against it. Early on, the reader learns she is married to an unfaithful man...
