Lilliet Berne
Lilliet Berne is the narrator and main character of Queen of the Night. She is a resourceful and intelligent character, capable of asserting herself in any role - both in real life and in opera. Throughout the story, she uses several different names depending on her situation. Even Lilliet Berne is not her real name, but one taken from a tomb after her family’s death.
At the beginning of the novel, Lilliet seem obsessed with fate. She blames it for almost everything, and feels trapped by it. Even as she recants her story, she mentions the threads of fate and how they guide her life. It is not until the novel’s resolution that she sees fate as something she controls.
As a narrator, Lilliet often shifts from her internal thoughts to a third person point of view, usually using comments from admirers or the press...
