Roles Evolve in Relationships

The novel examines how roles in relationships evolve within a family, friendship, and community.

Heather Cash is a high school student who is feeling the pressure of the “sprint” toward adulthood. Like most people, she has multiple roles that are sometimes at odds with each other. Heather has a difficult situation at home because her mother Connie is struggling with some unnamed mental health issues and often remains in her bedroom for days at a time. As a result, Heather sees herself as filling many of the roles of the wife of the home. She makes the point that she does include the romantic role with her father Gary, but she does ensure that dinner is ready when Gary comes home from work and joins him in protecting her younger sister Junie from information about a dangerous man in town.
