Summary
In Chapter 43, Heather thinks about the fact that Sheriff Nillson and Ed Godo are dangerous with connections to Maureen, Beth, and Brenda. Heather wants to talk to Claude, but she does not feel she owes him an apology. Heather follows an ambulance and police car, sirens blaring, toward the quarry. Several officers are so caught up in their work that they do not stop Heather as she joins them beside Brenda's corpse. Brenda is not wearing her own clothes, and her body is posed. Heather begins to howl out her anguish, but believes the sound is coming from Brenda.
In Chapter 44, someone gives Heather a shot that calms her. A deputy drives her home, leaving her alone in the living room. When Gary arrives home, he cries in Heather's arms. He says Brenda is dead, Anton and Ricky deny knowing anything about it...
