Summary
This story is told from the first person perspective of an 80-year-old woman named Jane. Sections of this story are written in italics and represent Jane’s internal dialogue about her experiences while the regular font represents standard narration and Jane’s outward dialogue with her old partial friend, partial social enemy, Celia Binns.
Jane is skeptical and judges Celia’s every move. They meet shortly after a funeral attended by Celia and unattended by Jane. The two discuss the fact that the last time they saw one another was at a different funeral when each woman was about 60. The women do not really like each other very much. Jane is still confused and upset that Celia stole her husband from her years ago. Celia does not apologize for marrying Hugh, reminding Jane that it was ultimately his choice to leave...
