Love as a Source of Strength and Encouragement

Through Carlos and Nik's evolving romance, the author explores the ways in which true love may act as a source of strength and encouragement for the individual. Although both Nik and Carlos are initially reluctant to engage in a committed romantic endeavor, as their affair progresses, the reader begins see the ways in which they have begun relying on one another. Nik's willingness to be vulnerable with Carlos about her failed relationships prior parallels Carlos's eventual ability to talk about his deceased father, consequent grief, and complicated connections with his family. Though both characters are markedly strong-willed and independent, their willingness to trust one another illustrates their need for a listening ear, for a potential life counterpart. Because they are such fully formed individuals, their relationship is able to progress towards healthy mutuality.
