Summary
In “Samuel,” Isaiah and Samuel knew – following their encounter with Paul – that they had to run away now, or risk being sold apart. Their plan was that Isaiah would swim across the river, and Samuel would meet him on the other side after he had kept his appointment with Timothy. Maggie had kept a door open on Timothy’s instructions, but she criticized Samuel for entering the house instead of fleeing with Isaiah. Upstairs, a naked Timothy met Samuel and tried to draw him to the bed. He told Samuel of his plans to set most of the slaves free when he inherited his father’s property. When he suggested that Isaiah and Samuel could come to his bedroom together next time, Samuel lost his temper. He knocked Timothy to the floor, and killed him with an ax that he had...
