Summary
Outside the house, Alwyn and Manie say goodbye. Alwyn encourages him to "take strength in Christ" (41). In the car, Alwyn thinks about his role as minister. He sees himself as an instrument of God in the Swart family. He thinks Rachel's death will allow him to "acquire a desirable piece of land" (41).
Marina supervises Salome in the kitchen. When Amor enters, she berates her for disappearing when they took Rachel's body away. Eventually everyone goes to bed. Each family member is alone in their private thoughts and dreams. Amor tries to sleep, but cannot rest.
