The Farm
Much of the story takes place in Euphemia’s childhood home, which is a farm and accompanying house in rural Canada. Her father inherited the farm from his parents. In the summer of 1947, Beryl and Mr. Florence come to visit for a few days. In the 1960s, Euphemia’s parents sell the farm. The new occupants turn the farm into a hippie commune before the property is sold again a few years later.
Ramsay
Ramsay is a small, fictional Canadian town described as being next to the Ottawa River. It should not be confused with the real town of Ramsey. Marietta and Beryl grew up in Ramsay, where their father did administrative work for a nearby lumber mill. Marietta recalls her childhood there as being generally defined by dysfunction and resentment between her parents, while Beryl recalls those years with more of a sense of humor.
