Summary
David and Claire go to the cemetery where Franz Kafka is buried. They visit Kafka’s grave and see that he is buried between his parents, both of whom outlived Franz. David contemplates Kafka’s complicated views of his rather ordinary parents. Back at their hotel, Claire rests while David contemplates his next class at the university. He decides that the class will be organized “around the subject of erotic desire” (179). Claire goes to sleep, and David feels very much in love with her. That night, he goes to a plaza where prostitutes gather, simply to observe them. He begins writing the introduction to his class syllabus. The introduction states that the class will focus on erotic desire and that his goals are to educate the students on literature and to enlighten them on the role of sexuality in their own lives.
