Summary
In Chapter 44, Loth has also seen Ead. He believes he is being drugged and realizes that he is forgetting who he really is. Ead confronts Chassar, furious that he has kept Loth hidden. She is also angry when she learns she is being sent to the outer reaches of the known South to find and destroy a dragon egg. The Prioress has chosen Ead because she was able to sustain her siden for years while being away from the tree, which is rare, and because she fears Ead has become too invested in Sabran and Inys. Ead is furious and Chassar suggests she could offer to have a child, in which case Mita might send someone else. Mita interrupts that heated exchange and makes it clear that Ead has no choice but to do as she is ordered.
