Summary
In Chapter 1, President Jonathon Lincoln Duncan participates in a practice session of a hearing with the House Select Committee. The president’s chief of staff, Carolyn Brock, does not want him to participate in the hearing. They both believe that Lester Rhodes, the Speaker of the House, is determined to destroy the president’s career. Duncan ordered American forces to stop an attack against Suliman Cindoruk, the leader of terrorist group Sons of Jihad. This order, paired with an alleged phone call to Suliman, has led Duncan to be accused of helping the terrorist and begging him for mercy. Duncan is aware of a threat to America of which Rhodes is not aware that led to the saving of Suliman and the phone call, however, Rhodes wants to see to it that Duncan is impeached.
