Summary
Chapter 10
The novel broadens to give the backstory to the Native Americans displaced through the determined (and entirely illegal) efforts by the federal government to take their lands and develop them into profitable ranches. Edward Nappo’s father had been a chief in the tribe before the establishment of the onerous reservation system in which the Natives’ lives were strictly monitored, their freedoms routinely violated, as they were compelled to live in abject poverty in substandard government housing. Now a grown man, Edward wanted his young son to see the lands that were once his nation’s, in effect the land stolen through the machinations of treaty breaking. Without notifying the Indian Affairs agent in violation of government protocols, the father and son stole off the reservation and headed unknowingly to the Burbank ranch which had been the heart of their lost nation...
