Chapter 3 begins in Stavrogin's home the morning after the eventful fête. We find Lisa, in her dress from the evening before, sitting in Stavrogin's parlor after clearly having spent the night with him. They begin to quarrel and Stavrogin begs Lisa not to leave him after their night together. Lisa, is upset with herself and claims that she must leave. Stavrogin protests and says that he has paid for their night together with a life—not his, but someone else's.
