Pericles
Pericles is the prince of the Lebanese city-state of Tyre. He should not be confused with the real-life historical figure, a well-known Greek statesman also named Pericles. The fictional character of Pericles (aka Appolinus) is generally known from the play Pericles, Prince of Tyre. Many of the events in the novel are derived directly from that play, but some events and details are changed. The approximate era of these events is ambiguous, but it appears to be over 2,000 years ago. In the world of this novel, Pericles of Tyre appears to have actually been a real person. Pericles is the prince of the city of Tyre, but he spends virtually all of his time traveling abroad by boat. He has many adventures, both positive and negative.
