Summary

The story shifts focus back to Angelica, who still refuses to speak or eat. She spends much of each day asleep. It is clear to Philippe that Angelica will die without medical attention. However, he knows that if he brings in doctors, Angelica might tell them about the history of abuse. Philippe hires a private doctor with the implicit condition that the doctor keep the situation confidential. The doctor arrives that the house and inserts a feeding tube into Angelica in order to force-feed her. The story then shifts focus to Chloe, who is still living in the village and using the adopted name Emilia. She arrives at the household of an old man named Kerimon, who used to be a very wealthy man but has lost much of his wealth in past years. Kerimon hosts Chloe out of charity, and Chloe repays him...
