Summary
The narrative shifts focus to England in the late 1610s. Specifically, the narrative focuses on George Wilkins, the man who collaborated with William Shakespeare on writing the play Pericles. Wilkins’ main profession throughout his life was owning and operating an inn that was also a brothel. The story focuses on Wilkins shortly before his death. He is very ill, and his body is covered with cysts and bumps. His heart has begun to fail. While sleeping, Wilkins has dreams of his childhood and other times in his life. The narration then recounts the unpleasant ways in which members of Wilkins’ family have died over the years. Wilkins dies, and becomes a ghost.
