Rin's scars

Rin's scars are symbolic of her drive and desire to do anything she can in order to gain power. Rin inflicts those scars upon herself by dripping hot wax on herself when she feels as she is going to fall asleep while studying for the Keju. She realizes that the "Pain could make her focus" and she uses that pain in order to keep pushing her towards passing the Keju (22). Rin believes that pain is the path to her gaining power, and she will inflict mass amounts of it in order to gain as much power as she needs. Her scars remind her and readers of the pain and sacrifice she will go through in order to obtain the power she has always dreamed of.
