Pages 81 - 103 Summary
Instead of supporting his friend, Judge Tip Clanahan hands Daniel's case off to his grandson, claiming that he has to go to Hot Springs for health reasons during the time that the trial will be taking place. Although they had always been close friends, Daniel becomes upset at DeYancey when he tells him that he will not be allowed to testify at his own trial. Daniel is not locked up in prison as the people trust him not to run away. Besides, Edna Earle knows that Daniel will stay with her. Even so, DeYancey follows Daniel everywhere, having him practice being quiet and making sure he doesn't talk about the case to others.
