Newark
Newark is the most populous city in the state of New Jersey. Newark is very close to New York City. Newark is the birthplace and childhood home of the book’s author, as well as the fictionalized version of the author who serves as the novel’s main point-of-view character. The main character Philip lives with his family in Newark for the entirety of the narrative, and they view the city fondly and proudly as their home. They live in a Newark neighborhood that is predominantly comprised as Jewish residents, such as themselves. Philip shows a particularly strong attachment to Newark and is prepared to run away from home rather than relocate with his family to Canada in order to flee fascism, or to Kentucky if forced by the government.
