Summary
“The Travelers” strays from the narrative of the Marietta settlers to address the comments of many travelers through Ohio and down the Muskingam River. Figures such as Frances Trollope, mother of the famous writer Anthony Trollope, as well as Charles Dickens and J.S. Buckingham were a few of the great number of British people who passed through the country in awe of the West. Though not always positive in their reviews, the one thing nearly every traveler could agree on was the beauty of the land. Dickens took issue with the manners of Americans, and all lambasted the Americans in power for allowing and supporting the phenomenon of slavery. Also, the treatment of the natives by both settlers and politicians was greatly criticized by Brits of every stature.
