Summary
Gilbert and Yosa attended the kabuki performance, despite Gilbert's reservations. The show featured an actor famous for his representations of women, and he danced very slowly while performing costume changes behind a large parasol, carried by two assistants. Gilbert was annoyed at first, but gradually his appreciation grew. Next, the two men visited the Imperial Palace Gardens, where Gilbert admired the pine trees. They then returned to the hotel and prepared for bed. Suddenly, Yosa began talking about the first and only date he had ever been on. He had invited the girl to a restaurant, but as they ate, Yosa became convinced that she was a fox disguised as a human woman.
