Charlie
Charlie is the protagonist of Stephen Chbosky's "The Perks of Being A Wallflower." Charlie is a young teenager. At fifteen, he is making the transition from middle school to high school. Charlie has had ongoing psychological issues since he was a young child. The source of his emotional distress is not clear to the reader or to Charlie himself.
Charlie tells his story through a series of letters to an anonymous source who he does not know but who he heard was kind and understanding and didn't "sleep around." Through his letters, Charlie is able to express the fears, pain and emotion that is incapable of expressing directly to his family or to his friends. Charlie's "specialness" has not gone unnoticed.
